Herbal Smoothie - How to Make
This winter season, I have given a new twist to my smoothies. To help combat colds and flu, I have been adding immune-boosting herbs to my smoothies. Not only do these smoothies have cold and flu-fighting properties, they also keep us hydrated, which is also very important in preventing and fighting these illnesses. My recipe below will give you an idea of what ingredients you can use. Once you get the hang of it, go ahead and experiment on your own with different herbs and fruits! You can also add some of the other ingredients from my super smoothie recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 cup frozen blueberries or other fruits
- 1/2 cup yogurt or kefir from goat’s milk, which is easier to digest and does not increase cause congestion like cow’s milk
- 1/2 cup coconut water – a good source of electrolytes and adds sweetness to the smoothie
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme – is antibacterial and antifungal, and it fights against bronchitis and coughs
- 1/2 teaspoon dried hibiscus flowers – high in vitamin C and has anti-inflammatory properties, also helps lower blood pressure
- 1/2 teaspoon dried chamomile – has a calming effect and can help infections
- 1/2 teaspoon dried echinacea flowers – increases white blood cell count to help fight off viruses
- 1/2 teaspoon elderberry flowers – is antiviral
- 1 tablespoon gelatin powder (made from grass-fed beef) – I use a hydrolyzed collagen as it’s water soluble and doesn’t form a gel. It increases reproduction of blood cells for healing and conditioning, so it’s great for bone and joint health care.
- 1-2 teaspoons honey (optional) – contains antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties and adds sweetness
Directions:
Combine everything in a blender and blend until smooth, and enjoy!
